La Charanguera and DJ Jules
New York City
1. What or whom inspired you to become a salsa DJ?
I am not a DJ per say, but my inspiration and idol has been Vicki Sola from “Que Viva La Musica” WFDU 89.1 FM.
She gave me the opportunity to co-host her show and play my favorite Charanga music. Another inspiration has
been Awilda Rivera from WBGO 88.3 FM and her Latin Jazz.
2. Why did you pick your DJ name? Is there a special meaning behind it?
I was crowned “La Charangera” by Tommy Bonafe on Vicki Sola’s show “Que Viva La Musica” because of my love
for Charanga music.
3. At what point did you realize you had enough music to pursue DJing seriously?
I have been collecting music since the 70’s and for the past 20+ years; my partner Jules Asencio has improved my
4. Name three of your favorite bands/artists of all time?
There are definitely more than three, but I will narrow it down to Orquesta Broadway, Orquesta Aragon and Cheo
5. What qualities must a song possess in order to make it to your playlist?
Great rhythm, which to me is violins, flute and piano played in a way that makes you feel it deep in your soul and
your feet just want you to get up and dance!
6. What other types of music do you like aside from this genre?
Latin Jazz, Jazz, R & B Motown, Boleros and Ballads, Classical and Reggae
7. Who are some of your favorite salsa DJs past or present?
Wow..Vicki Sola, Jose Calderon, Jeff Stenette, Cisco, Tommy Bonafe and the The Latin Warriors. Ernie Ensley and
Rene Santiago, May they both RIP; I miss them both.
8. Every DJ has a bucket list of goals as a DJ – What is one of your “DJ bucket list” dreams or goals?
I really don’t have a bucket list anymore. I admired and wanted to be just like Vicki Sola and Awilda Rivera, but now I
am just satisfied and happy to be a co-host for Vicki and Andre Padua occasionally.
9. If someone were to talk about you as a DJ, what would they say?
Esther plays great Charanga music and has a very soothing and calm voice.
10. What does being a Salsa Warrior mean for you?
It is a great honor and pleasure to be a part of this magnificent group. I will wear my shield proudly and I am very
happy to play the music that will make my listeners want to dance and forget their sorrows, anguish, and whatever
hardship the day brings them.
Additional comments you’d like to share with your listeners:
I love all types of Salsa music played by so many wonderful and talented musicians. I just happen to love Charanga
a bit more than cha cha cha, mambo, guaguanco, etc. I hope all my listeners will enjoy my music as much as I do. I
know quite a few that love it as much.
& Jules Asencio
